This research is led by Jerry Kelly, whose father was a storyteller, his grandfather a traditional musician, and his great-grandmother a cara na ndaoine maithe.  When he learned to read, Jerry started with his grandfather's books filled with the history, myth, and folklore of Ireland, and hasn't stopped since.


Irish Language & Cultural Activities
Jerry is a former Adjunct Professor of Irish Language and Culture at Fordham University.  He also taught Irish Language & Gaelic Culture in the Irish Studies Institute of Molloy College, Irish Gaelic at The Irish Arts Center in New York, plus mythology and Seanchas through the medium of the Irish Language at Scoil Ghaeilge Ghearóid Tóibín / The Gerry Tobin Irish Language School.  In 2004, he helped re-organize Cumann Carad na Gaeilge / The Philo-Celtic Society and instituted its on-line Irish Language school in 2007.  

He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Irish Studies Institute of Molloy College, teaches Irish as a volunteer on behalf of Cumann Carad na Gaeilge / The Philo-Celtic Society (www.philo-celtic.com), and writes the Seanchas column for the Irish Language magazine AN GAEL.  He is a member of Cumann Carad na Gaeilge / The Philo-Celtic Society and the American Conference for Irish Studies.


Education
Jerry holds a Master's Degree in Celtic Studies, with distinction, from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.  He is also a graduate of Yale University and the Harvard Business School.  His coursework at University of Wales Trinity Saint David has included Celtic linguistics, research methodologies in Celtic Studies, the Celtic Arthur, the Mabinogion, early and medieval Irish Christianity,   He wrote his dissertation on the hereditary ecclesiastical families of the medieval diocese of Elphin.  His graduate and non-credit courses in the Celtic Languages & Literatures Department of the Harvard University Extension School included Old Irish, Modern Irish, Comparative Celtic Linguistics, early Irish historical tales, Celtic mythology, and the early modern history of England and Celtic Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.  His additional post-graduate coursework has included American Ethnic History (SUNY Empire State College, Early Irish Literature - 5th to 12th centuries (City University of New York Graduate Center), and Cultural Geography (University of Wisconsin).  His coursework at Yale included archaeology of the Western world and the Middle East, Minoan & Mycenaean archaeology, the Indo- European cultural expansion and its mythology, and classical civilization including Greek and Roman religion and Homeric epic

 

Research

His favorite areas of research include the Irish in Colonial America, advanced Irish grammar, and Seanchas.  Until the 17th century, Seanchas was the indivisible combination of Brehon law, history, and genealogy as applied to Irish clans and tribes.
